SDTC Annual Scholarship Guidelines

 

Amount: $500.00

Application Deadline: May 3, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

 

Eligibility Criteria:

• Be a high school senior.

• Demonstrate a strong commitment to democracy, equality, and civic engagement.

• Reside in Southbury (open to students outside of Region 15).

• Submit a completed application by the specified deadline.

 

Applicants must submit the following materials to be considered for the scholarship:

• A completed scholarship application form, including personal information and contact details.

• A 500–700 word essay on: "Please describe the volunteerism/community service you have participated in and how it has supported your personal growth and your community."

• A 250-word essay on: "Why one of the following values is important to you: Voting Rights, Equality, or Living in a Democracy."

• Two letters of recommendation from a teacher, librarian, school counselor, or community leader (non-family members only).

• A list of any additional participation in clubs, volunteer work, community projects, or political/civic engagement activities, including dates and the name of the activity leader.

 

SELECTION PROCESS

A selection committee composed of SDTC members will review applications based on the following criteria:

 

• Demonstrated commitment to civic engagement.

• Clarity and persuasiveness of the essays.

• Strength of letters of recommendation.

• Extracurricular participation and evidence of civic involvement.

 

Timeline:

• Application Opens: March 18, 2025

• Application Deadline: May 3, 2025, at 11:59 p.m.

• Recipient Notification: May 30, 2025

• Scholarship Fund Distribution: Early Summer 2025

 

Payment Disbursement:

The scholarship funds will be paid directly to the selected applicant by check.

The SDTC Scholarship winner will also be asked to allow their name and photo to be used on social media and in press releases.
